Getting To and From

Introduction :  "The Traverse" is a western (lonely planet) creation.  Very few japanese hikers hike from one end of the park to the other, and the ones that do have no special word or idea for it.  That said, it is the best way to experince Daisetsuzan National Park. The park managment has perposally left a large section of the trail without a hut or a trailhead that allows dayhikers to reach it to keep the masses away.

Duration : 5 days is the minium that most people could hike it.  i would also add at least one day for bad weather or incase you don't make it as far as you think.  Plus a day to get there and back,

Equipment :  Tent, way to treat or boil water, stove, sleeping bag, raingear, detailed map, etc

Cost : i have hitchhiked there and brought my food and spent just a few dollars on snacks and a hotspring after i was done.  if you take the bus and ropeways and stay in a hotel before and after it could cost more than 200$  Either way it is cheaper than most travel in Japan.  really up to you....

Maps / Guide Books :  all detailed maps are in Japanese.  this is the only detailed guide online that im aware of. The Lonely Planet hiking japan covers this hike, but personally having hiked it many times it still confuses me to read their section on it.  I suggest just buying a japanese map, that should be enough.  even if you dont read japanese you should be able to match up the Kanji on the map with the Kanji on the signs and know where you are.

Getting to and from :   see the getting there.... section of my Daisetsuzan guide.

This is very basic because most of the information needed is covered in my Daisetsuzan Guide.  If you think of anything that is missing or have any questions please contact me.
