Sounkyo is a very popular resort area on the northern end of the Daisetsuzan National Park. It is a good starting place to hike Kuro Dake. There is a ropeway and also a trail. i've never stayed at a hotel there, but i have found the convenient store, 500Y hot spring, Bus Station, and the visitor center very useful when starting or ending a hiking trip there.
